what’s an attitude?
a predeposition to act in a particular way towards something or someone in a persons environment
are attitudes learnt?
yes
what’s cognitive, beliefs?
formed through past experiences and what has been learnt by others. This aspect reflects or beliefs and knowledge and is normally influenced by parents or peers
what affective, emotions?
depends on past experiences. This is our feelings of an emotional response towards an attitude or object
what’s behavioural, behaviour?
concerned with how a person behaves towards a specific situation. Not always consistent with attitude
what are positive attitudes formed by?
- belief in the benefits of exercise
- enjoyable experiences in sport
- being good at a particular sport
- being excited by the challenge of sport
- using sport as a stress relief
- influence where participation is the norm
what are negative attitudes formed by?
- not believing in the benefits of exercise
- bad past experience
- lack of ability
- fear of taking part in sport
- suffering stress when taking part
- influence of others when non-participation is the norm
what does the cognitive dissonance theory suggest?
if a person holds 2 ideas that conflict with each other an element of discomfort or dissonance occurs
if attitudes are meant to remain stable what should all elements of the tridaic model do?
they should stay consistent
how to change attitudes: cognitive?
providing new info to dispel old thoughts
how to change attitudes: affective?
changed by giving a different experience which might be more positive like praises and feedback
how to change attitudes: behavioural?
ensure skills are simplified to increase chances of success and reinforcement
what does the persuasive communication theory involves?
involves persuading an individual to change or alter their beliefs, attitudes and behaviour towards something.
what does the effectiveness of persuasion depend on according to the persuasive communication theory?
- the persuader
- the quality of the message
-the recipient and their characetristics
what’s the persuader?
this person needs to be one who’s perceived to be significant and have high status
what’s important about the quality of message?
needs to be presented in a way that makes the recipient want to change an attitude
what’s important about the recipient and their characteristics?
attitude is more easily changed if the recipient really wants to change
