Bandura Flashcards
(10 cards)
Area
The developmental area
Aim
To see if children would imitate aggressive behaviour shown by adults
Sample
72 children from Stanford University Nursery
Equal gender split
3 hypotheses
Children exposed to aggressive models would imitate this behaviour
Children were more likely to imitate models if they were the same sex
Boys are more pre-disposed to imitate aggression
Sampling method
Opportunity
Experimental design
Matched participants (on prior levels of aggression)
Procedure
Stage 1: Each child was taken into a room with high interest toys. A model sat at a table with toys and a bobo doll. In the aggressive condition the model turned to the bobo doll after 1 minute saying ‘POW!’
Stage 2: The mild aggression arousal stage. Each child was taken into a smaller room with attractive toys such as a fire engine and jet plane. They played for 2 minutes before being told they must be saved for other children.
Stage 3: In another room, toys included the new ones such as a dart gun and crayons. They played for 20 minutes while being watched through a one way mirror.
2 Quantitative findings
Boys showed 25.8 aggressive acts for an aggressive model vs 1.5 for the non aggressive model
Boys showed 38.2 imitative aggressive acts vs 12.7 for girls
1 qualitative finding
‘He’s a good fighter like daddy’
Conclusions
Boys are more aggressive than girls
Children tended to imitate the models’ behaviour
