What is the Oedipus complex?
Incestuous feelings felt by a son towards his mother
What are Freud’s stages of psychosexual development?
- Oral (child fascinated with putting things in their mouth)
- Anal (child can keep excrement inside until they feel contractions)
- Phallic (boys see differences in their body to girls and fear the girls have been castrated. The Oedipus Complex arises and they begin to see their father as a rival)
- Latency (child’s interest is diverted to other interests and hobbies like sports)
- Genital (sexual desire increases but towards people who resemble them)
Aim
To provide evidence for Freud’s theory of psychosexual development
Sample
Little Hans from Austria
Observation method
Self-report
Sampling method
Self-selecting
Procedure
- The father recorded Hans’ behaviours and wrote weekly letters to Freud
- Freud replied with his own interpretation and guidance on what to look for
Findings for Hans’ phobias
He was fearful of horses with blinkers because they resembled his father with glasses
He was scared of being let go in the bath by his mother because he secretly wished that would happen to his sister so that he wouldn’t have to share her attention - and then was being punished for that wish
Findings for Hans’ fantasies
He was playing with imaginary friends pretending to be the dad because it allowed him to be with his mother
Hans was interested in faeces when he followed his mother into the toilet because he was concerned about a loaded stomach (meaning pregnancy) taking away his mother’s attention
Conclusions
His theory of psychosexual development was correct
The Oedipus Complex is correct
Phobias come from the unconscious
