Grant Flashcards
(13 cards)
Area
Cognitive
Which classic study does it relate to?
Loftus and Palmer
What is context dependent memory?
We are able to recall information best if we recall it in the same environment me learned it in
Aim
To investigate context dependent memory in relation to meaningful prose
Sample
40 participants chosen by 8 student researchers
Sampling method
Opportunity
Experimental design
Independent measures
Procedure
- Participants read a 2 page article on psychoimmunology while wearing headphones that were either silent or had a recording for from the noise of the cafeteria at lunch.
- Participants were given both a recall and a recognition test again with headphones that had one of the two sounds (so there were 4 conditions in total)
Findings
Participants scored 14.3 in the recognition test when the contexts matched compared to 12.7 when they didn’t
Conclusion
Context dependent memory is a good theory
Similarities to Loftus and Palmer
Experimental design (independent measures)
Observation method (self-report using questionnaires)
Differences to Loftus and Palmer
They focus on different influences on memory (leading questions vs conditions learned in)
The type of stimuli given (video vs article/meaningful prose)
How has and hasn’t it changed our understanding from Loftus and Palmer?
It had investigated a new type of memory (context dependent vs reconstructive)
Still in the US
