Chaney Flashcards
(9 cards)
Area
The Devlopmental Area
What classic study does it link to?
Bandura
Aim
To see if positive reinforcement can be used to encourage children to want to use their inhalers properly
Sample
32 children from Australia
From different socioeconomic backgrounds
Aged 1-6 years
Procedure
- Parents were contacted then visited at home. Consent was obtained then they filled out a questionnaire about the child’s current spacer device.
- Parents were given a funhaler to use for 2 weeks
- Parents filled in another questionnaire asking about the Funhaler
2 Quantitative findings
80% of children achieved the desired number of breath cycles compared to 50% previously
60% of parents said they were satisfied with the device compared to 10% previously
Similarities with Bandura
- They both studied young children (3-5yrs and 1-6yrs)
- Both support nurture (behaviour changed by model and changed by inhaler)
Differences to Bandura
- The way data was collected (observation vs self-report)
- The experimental design (matched participants vs repeated measures)
How has and hasn’t it changed our understanding from Bandura?
It has shown us that children’s behaviour can be changed by reinforcement
It still only tells us about young children
