Yerkes’ procedure
- Alpha test for literate recruits. Included unscrambling sentences and analogies
- Beta test for illiterate recruits or those who failed alpha. Included maze running and cube counting. Some questions were written.
- Spoken exam for those who failed beta. Only 1/5 of people who failed beta actually took this test
Yerkes’ findings and conclusions
- The average mental age of a white American was 13 - just above that of a moron
- Black recruits were the least intellifent at a score of 10.41
Gould’s issues with design
Alpha criteria was not consistent across camps
Most questions were culturally biased
Gould’s issue with administration
The conditions were very chaotic
Gould’s issue with the long term impact
The results were used to suggest that some ethnic groups were superior to others. This was used to pass the Immigration Restriction Act. Many people were denied entry - including Jews who were trying to leave Europe before WW2. This had a very negative impact.
Gould’s conclusions
There were systematic errors that led to wrongful prejudice
Conditions were criticised as the recruits were ‘shared shitless’ due to no consent
