Block 15 Drugs Flashcards
(48 cards)
What class of drug is diphenoxylate?
Antimotility agent (opioid derivative)
What is the mechanism of action of diphenoxylate?
It inhibits gastrointestinal motility by acting on opioid receptors in the gut wall.
What is diphenoxylate used for?
Adjunctive treatment of acute diarrhea.
What are the side effects of diphenoxylate?
CNS depression at high doses, anticholinergic effects (with atropine), risk of dependence.
What class of drug is loperamide?
Antimotility agent (opioid receptor agonist)
What is the mechanism of action of loperamide?
It acts on peripheral opioid receptors to slow gut motility and increase water absorption.
What is loperamide used for?
Symptomatic treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea.
What are the side effects of loperamide?
Constipation, abdominal cramps, dizziness; toxic megacolon in infectious diarrhea.
What class of drug is kaolin?
Adsorbent antidiarrheal.
What is the mechanism of action of kaolin?
It adsorbs toxins, bacteria, and fluids in the gut.
What is kaolin used for?
Treatment of non-specific diarrhea (historical use, less common now).
What are the side effects of kaolin?
Constipation; may reduce absorption of other oral medications.
What class of drug is ispaghula husk?
Bulk-forming laxative.
What is the mechanism of action of ispaghula husk?
It absorbs water in the intestine, increasing stool bulk and stimulating peristalsis.
What is ispaghula husk used for?
Treatment of constipation.
What are the side effects of ispaghula husk?
Bloating, flatulence; risk of bowel obstruction if taken without enough water.
What class of drug is lactulose?
Osmotic laxative.
What is the mechanism of action of lactulose?
It is metabolized in the colon to organic acids, drawing water into the bowel and lowering pH.
What is lactulose used for?
Treatment of constipation and hepatic encephalopathy.
What are the side effects of lactulose?
Bloating, flatulence, abdominal cramps, diarrhea.
What class of drug is bisacodyl?
Stimulant laxative.
What is the mechanism of action of bisacodyl?
It stimulates enteric nerves to increase intestinal motility and promotes fluid secretion.
What is bisacodyl used for?
Short-term treatment of constipation; bowel prep before procedures.
What are the side effects of bisacodyl?
Abdominal cramps, diarrhea, electrolyte imbalance with prolonged use.
