Cardiomyopathies (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy) Flashcards
(5 cards)
What is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy?
Left ventricular hypertrophy without underlying hypertension or valvular disease
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is characterized by thickened heart muscle, particularly affecting the left ventricle.
What is the systolic function in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy?
Usually normal
Despite the thickening of the heart muscle, the heart can still pump effectively during systole.
What happens to diastolic filling pressure in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy?
Increased due to increased left ventricular stiffness
This increased stiffness affects the heart’s ability to relax and fill properly during diastole.
What is the prevalence ranking of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy among cardiomyopathies?
Second most common cardiomyopathy
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy follows dilated cardiomyopathy in terms of prevalence.
What are the causes of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy?
Sarcomere protein mutations
These mutations affect the proteins that make up the heart muscle, leading to hypertrophy.
