Cerebral Palsy Flashcards
(7 cards)
Cause of CP
malformation of brain structures or injury to structures during the prenatal, perinatal, or postnatal periods
Early indicators of CP
hypotonia
spasticity in limbs with or without hypotonia proximally
Persistence of primitive reflexes
development of clonus, asymmetrical motor development or involuntary movements
Spastic CP
UMN dysfunction that causes increased muscle tone
Severe spasticity at rest and with voluntary movement leading to decreased ROM and contractures
Dyskinetic CP
dysfunction in basal ganglia
presents with wide fluctuations of muscle tone and motor control
Dyskinetic movements occur at rest and with voluntary movements
Ataxic CP
dysfunction in cerebellum
poorly coordinated movements
Over- and undershooting of limbs during voluntary motor activities
wide base and unsteady gait, decreased precision in direction for motor control
Gross Motor Functional Classification System for CP
I- Walks without limitation
II- Walks with limitations
III-Walks using hand-held mobility device
IV- self-mobility with limitations
V- transport in manual wc
Manual Ability Classification for Children with CP
I- handles objects easily and with success
II- handles most objects, but with somewhat reduced quality or speed
III- handles objects with difficulty, needs help to prepare and modify activities
IV- handles a limited selection of easily managed objects in adapted situations
V- does not handle objects, has a severely limited ability to perform simple actions
