Tonic-clonic Seizures
motor and non-motor seizure presentation
brief warning/aura
tonic phase: loss of consciousness, stiffening of body, heavy breathing drooling
clonic phase: alternating rigidity and relaxation of muscles
Myoclonic seizures
brief involuntary jerking of upper body and extremities
Absence seizures
typically between 3 and 12 years old
brief impairments of consciousness without loss of muscle tone, involuntary movements or falling down
rapidly blinking or staring into space
person does not recall episode or lapse in time
Focal seizure without loss of consciousness
may begin with aura
involuntary, repetitive jerking of the hand and arm occurs but individual maintains interaction with environment
Simple Febrile Seizures
most common type of seizure that occurs under age of 5
can be simple or complex and occur during acute illness and last through spell of illness
do not cause damage and do not lead to epilepsy
First aid procedures for seizures
remove dangerous items
protect individual from harm without interfering with movements
turn individual on side if at risk for aspiration
once clonus activity is over place in recovery position (side-lying)
When should you call 911 for a seizure
if its the individuals first seizure
if the seizure is in water
if the person has a second seizure
if the individual does not regain consciousness after 5-10 minutes
if the seizure lasts more than five minutes
if the individual is diabetic or pregnant
Post-seizure care
allow individual to rest or sleep
notify parents or caregivers
observe behaviors for any risks after seizure occurs
Atonic seizures
brief loss of postural tone and can cause person to fall
