Spinal Level Reflexes Flashcards
(6 cards)
Involuntary Responses
basic, specific, and predictable
dependent upon an intact reflex arc
may be monosynaptic or polysynaptic
The basis for unconscious motor functions and basic defense mechanisms
Stretch reflex
stim: muscle stretch
function: maintain muscle tone, support agonist muscle contraction
Sensitivity and intactness of the SC segment are tested by applying a stretch to the deep tendon
Inverse stretch reflex
Stim: muscle contraction
function: provide agonist inhibition, diminution of force of agonist contraction
Gamma Reflex Loop
allows muscle tension to come under control of descending pathways, regulating level of tension in muscle
Flexor Reflex
Stimulus: cutaneous sensory stimuli to the flexor muscle
protective withdrawal to remove the body part from harmful stimuli
Crossed extension reflex
Stimulus: painful stimuli and reciprocal action of antagonist, opposite responses occur in opposite limbs
function: coordinates reciprocal limb activities such as gait
