Ch. 12- CNS Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is found within gray matter?
Neuron cell bodies (nuclei/nucleus)
What is found within white matter?
Bundles of myelinated axons (tracts)
Special connective tissues that cover brain
Meninges
3 layers of meninges
Dura mater (superficial; tough mother); Arachnoid mater (spider like); Pia Mater (directly on top of brain; delicate)
Subdural space
in between dura mater and Arachnoid mater; where venous structures drain blood from brain
2 locations of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
Subarachnoid space, & brain ventricles; produced by choroid plexuses in lateral ventricles and released by ciliated ependymal cells (also found in central canal of spinal cord)
Organization of brain
Superficial gray matter (cerebral cortex) -> intermediate white matter -> deep gray matter (basal nuclei)
Subarachnoid space
in between Arachnoid mater and pia mater; cerebral spinal fluid
Organization of spinal cord
central gray matter; peripheral white matter
