Ch. 14- Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
(13 cards)
Properties of Autonomic Nervous System
Involuntary
Sensory (afferent) or Motor (efferent)
2 motor pathways
Smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, glands
2 neurons in pathway (ganglia- neuron cell bodies in PNS are site of synapse between pre and post ganglionic nerves)
Can be excitatory or inhibitory
Motor pathways of ANS
Parasympathetic (rest and digest) or Sympathetic (fight or flight)
Parasympathetic Origins
CN III, VII, IX, X
Sacral spinal nerves S2, S3, S4
(craniosacral)
Parasympathetic pathway
Ganglia- located on/near effector organ
1.LONG pre- ganglionic
2. SHORT post-ganglionic
Parasympathetic neurotransmitters
ACh only
Sympathetic Origins
Lateral horn cells T1-L1/L2
(thoracolumbar)
Sympathetic pathway
All ganglia- located within sympathetic chain (trunk)
1.SHORT pre-ganglionic
2. LONG post-ganglionic
Sympathetic neurotransmitters
Pre-ganglionic = ACh
Post-ganglionic = Norepinephrine/epinephrine
PS vs S effect on heart
PS- slows heart rate; S- increases heart rate
PS vs S effect on lungs
PS- constricts brachii; S- dialates brachii
PS vs S effect on Digestive system
PS- stimulates digestive system; S- inhibits digestive system
PS vs S effect on eye (pupil)
PS- constricts pupil; S- dialates pupil
PS vs S effect on blood vessels
PS- dialates blood vessels, lowers BP; S- constricts blood vessels, raises BP
