Ch. 13- Peripheral Nervous System Flashcards
(9 cards)
Spinal Nerves
exist in intervertebral foramen; ventral and dorsal roots coming together
How many pairs of spinal nerves?
31 pairs; 8 Cervical (C1 exits above atlas; C8 exits below C7)
12 thoracic
5 lumbar
5 sacral
1 coccygeal
(lumbar, sacral and coccygeal form Cauda Equina)
Nerve Plexuses
formed by ventral primary rami of spinal nerves
3 peripheral nerve plexuses
Cervical plexus (C1-C4); Brachial plexus (C5-T1); Lumbosacral plexus (L1-S4)
Cervical Plexus
(C1-C4)
Phrenic nerve (C3-C5) supplies diaphragm
Brachial plexus
(C5-T1)
MARMU- musculotaneous, axillary, radial, median and ulnar nerves
common injury- stinger injury
Lumbosacral plexus
(L1-S4)
Femoral, Obturator, Pudendal & Sciatic nerve (longest nerve in the body)
common injury- sciatic=pinched nerve
Why do T2-T12 differ from rest of spinal nerves?
Ventral Rami don’t form plexus; intercostal nerves
Dermatome
area of skin supplied by a single spinal nerve; sensory
