CH. 30 Chest Injuries Flashcards
(16 cards)
Types of chest injuries
Types of pneumothorax
simple pneumothorax
open pneumothorax
hemothorax
hemopneumothorax
tension pneumothorax
s/s pneumothorax
tracheal deviation
Jugular vein distention(JVD)
absent or dimineshed lung sounds
unequal chest tise:2-3 broken ribs
sucking chest wound
cardiac tamponade
the pericardial sac fills w/fluid
s/s cardiac tamponade
decreased mental status
chest pain
becks triad
-jugular vein distention
-narrowing blood pressure
-muffled heart tones
chest fractures
clavicular
sternal
costal
-flail chest
s/s chest fractures
paradoxical movement
difficulty breathing due to pain
pulmonary/myocardial contusion
pulmonary: alveoli fill w/blood & fluid accumulates in the injured area
myocardial: causes irregular heart beats or dysrrhythmias
s/s pulmonary/myocardial contusion
hypoxia
crackles: fluid build up
irregular heartbeat
chest pain
ecchymosis of chest wall
Traumatic Asphyxia
sudden severe compression of the chest
-unrestrained drivers
-crush injury
s/s: Traumatic Asphyxia
JVD
cyanosis
hemorrhage in the sacral, facial vessels
exopthalmos
commotio cordis
a sudden, direct blow to the chest at an exact moment during heart contraction sending pt into ventricular fibrillation
s/s:
laceration of the great vessels
s/s:
shearing/tearing chest pain radiating to the back(between shoulder blades)
Gun shot wound(GSW)/ sucking chest wounds
open injury to the chest wall in which air enters the thoracic cavity &/or pulmonary space leading to hypoxia
s/s: GSW & sucking chest wounds
