Environmental Exposures Flashcards
(10 cards)
Objective
Cold Exposure
Normal body temp. 98.6
when the bodys temp falls below 95, the conditions is called hyperthermia
signs/symptoms
progresses through 4 stages
pull back your glove and place the back of your hand on the patients abdomen to determine core temp.
table 33-1 p.1204
treatement
- increase or decrease heat production(shivering)
- move to an area where heat loss is decreased or increased
- wear appropriate clothing for the environment
- perform rapid assessment
- eval core temp. by placing the back of your hand on the abdomen
- eval mental status quickly using AVPU scale
- assessment should include changes that occur
Heat Exposure
the body attempts to refulate temp by:
-sweating
Heat Cramps
p.1211
-painful muscle spasms that occur after vigorous exercises
-exact cause of heat cramps not fully understood
Heat Exhaustion
p.1211
most common type of heat emergency
S/S include:
-dizziness, weakness, or syncope
Heat Stroke
p.1212
Occurs when the body is subjected to more heat than it can handle, normal mechanism for getting rid of heat have failed
S/S include:
-Hot, dry flushed skin, bc the sweating system has failed
-Body temp. quickly rises
-changes in behavior
-seizure may occur
