Ch 40 Flashcards
(17 cards)
define epithelial tissues
tissues that lines all surfaces inside & out including cavities of internal organs like veins & livers. It separates the inside from the outside of the body
name the functions of epithelial tissues
- protection - against water loss & pathogen
- absorption - in small intestine
- secretion
- Excretion
define simple
when epithelial tissue form a single layer
define stratified
when epithelial tissue form more than one layer
name the 3 shapes of epithelial tissue
- Flat - squamous
- cubed - cuboidal
- column - columnar
describe function of simple squamous epithelial
expedites delivery of nutrients & gas exchange found in capillaries
define connective tissue
tissues that connects structures together like skin to muscle. Provides support & protection in bone & cartilage. Fills spaces/stores fat & forms blood tissue.
describe function of Loose Connective Tissue
connects the skin to the muscle
describe function of Dense Connective Tissue
*Tendons - connect
muscles to bones
*Ligaments - connect bones to bones
describe cartilage
is skeleton of sharks & rays, fetal skeleton, nose, ear framework, etc in humans. contains no blood vessels, so cells gets nutrients by diffusion. takes long to heal
define Chondrocytes
cells of Cartilage
define Osteocytes
cells of bones
define Adipose Tissue
tissues that Insulates & provides padding to the body. Fibroblasts enlarge to store fat. Found beneath skin, around kidneys, & on surface of heart in mammals
define Adipocytes
cells of Adipose Tissue
define blood
a connective tissue in which the cells are separated by liquid called plasma. Functions include transportation, regulation & protection
define erythrocytes
red blood cells, transport oxygen & carbon dioxide
define leukocytes
white blood cells, fight infections
