Ch 43- Flashcards
(27 cards)
Define Plasma Cells
Antibody secreting factories that are derived from activated B cells
Define Dendritic Cells
Phagocytic & macropinocytic cells that present antigens to T cells to activate adaptive immunity
Define Neutrophils
Most numerous phagocytic cells (short-lived) they eat a few bacteria & die
Define Cytotoxic T cells
form from CD8 T cells; they bind to virus-infected cells that present Antigen & MHC I to them. They kill with perforins & granzymes
Define Macrophages
Long lived phagocytic cells—big eaters—first cell line of defense
Define Helper T cells
form from CD4 Tcells; they release cytokines that control immune war (Generals). They activate B cells & help them form plasma cells that make different kinds of antibodies
Define Natural Killer Cells
Innate Immune Cells, that kill virus-infected cells with perforins & granzymes
Define Mast Cells
Have histamine in their granules; have Receptors for IgE antibodies. Major players in allergic reactions
Define B cells
Adaptive immune cells, that bind specific antigen & with Helper T cells. They undergo clonal expansion & change into plasma cells. They will also form Memory cells
Define CD4 T cells
Adaptive immune cells that bind specific antigen+MHC II on a dendritic cell, undergo clonal expansion & change into helper T cells
Define CD8 T cells
Adaptive immune cells that bind specific antigen+MHC I on a dendritic cell, undergo clonal expansion & change into cytotoxic T cells
What cells kill virus-infected cells with perforins & granzymes?
Natural Killer cells & cytotoxic T cells
What cells forms pus?
Neutrophils
What cells have histamine & are involved in allergic reactions?
Mast cells
Which of the above cells will activate both CD4 & CD8 Tcells by presenting antigen with MHC 1 & MHC II?
Dendritic Cells
If you have increased levels of interferons in your blood, what type of infection do you have?
A Virus infection
What do you think would happen if a child was born with no Thymus?
You would not have any T cells & your B cells could not be activated by helper T cells. You have no functional adaptive immunity
What is the function of complement proteins?
To punch holes in bacteria & some viruses & cause Osmotic lysis
Name the 3 types phagocytic cells of the innate immune system
Macrophages, Neutrophils, and Dendritic Cells
describe Lymph
derived from tissue fluid & is carried in lymphatic vessels
define Interferons
proteins of innate immunity that are released by virus-infected cells to warn your healthy cells that a virus is near
define Apoptosis
programmed cell death as seen in plasma cells, helper T cells & cytotoxic T cells to control cell number
This antibody is found in the body secretions such as breast milk, tears, saliva, gastric juice, & mucous
IgA
This antibody is the most predominant antibody in the blood & lymph
IgG
