Chapter 1 Flashcards
(45 cards)
Population
A group of interacting individuals of one speies.
Cells
All Living things consist of cells.
Hypothesis
A proposed explanation for an observation.
Individuals with traits better suited to compete in the current environment will, on average, produce more…..?
Offspring.
Atom
Fundamental unit of matter.
Natural selction
Nonrandom unequal reproductive success among individuals.
Organ
consists of multiple tissues that cooperate to perform a specific task.
Organelle
A component of cell that performs specific function.
Scientific method
serves as a guideline for a scientist to understand an observation.
Organism
An individual livin being
Organ system
Group of organs that work together to perform vital body function
Reproduction
All organisms reproduce their own kind.
Genes
Units of hereditary information made form the molecule DNA.
Independent variable
The thing being manipulated.
Double Blind
When neither the researcher nor the participant knows which group is which.
Error Bars
maybe be used to represent the range of values that fall within a 95% confidence interval. That means that the authors can say with 95% confidence that the true answer falls within the range depicted by the bar. If error bars overlap, no significant difference.
Conclusion
Often raises further questions, will form new hypothesis.
Controlled experiments.
Investigate a hypothesis by changing only one variable.
Theory
Supported by a large and growing body of evidence.
Tissue
An integrated group of similar ells that work together to perform a specific function
Biology Define
The Scientific study of life
Biosphere
consists of all life on earth
Cell
The fundamental unit of life. Nothing smaller than the cell is able to have all the properties of life.
Response to the environment
All organisms respond to changes in the environment.
