chapter 3 Flashcards
(19 cards)
What is the Nervous System?
The Nervous System is a complex network that coordinates actions and sensory information by transmitting signals between different parts of the body.
What is Plasticity of the Brain?
Plasticity of the Brain refers to the brain’s ability to change and adapt as a result of experience.
What are Efferent nerves?
Efferent nerves are responsible for carrying signals away from the central nervous system to effectors like muscles and glands.
What are Afferent nerves?
Afferent nerves carry sensory signals from the body to the central nervous system.
What is the Central nervous System?
The Central nervous System consists of the brain and spinal cord, serving as the main control center for processing information.
What is the Autonomic nervous System?
The Autonomic nervous System regulates involuntary bodily functions, such as heartbeat and digestion.
What is the Sympathetic Nervous System?
The Sympathetic Nervous System prepares the body for stressful or emergency situations, often referred to as the ‘fight or flight’ system.
What is the Somatic nervous System?
The Somatic nervous System controls voluntary movements and transmits sensory information to the central nervous system.
What is the Peripheral nervous System?
The Peripheral nervous System connects the central nervous system to the limbs and organs.
What are Motor neurons?
Motor neurons are responsible for transmitting signals from the central nervous system to muscles, causing movement.
What are Glial Cells?
Glial Cells support and protect neurons in the nervous system.
What are Dendrites?
Dendrites are the branched extensions of a neuron that receive signals from other neurons.
What are Dominant-Recessive Genes?
Dominant-Recessive Genes refer to the inheritance patterns where dominant genes mask the effects of recessive genes.
What is EEG?
EEG (Electroencephalogram) is a test that detects electrical activity in the brain.
What is the Myelin Sheath?
The Myelin Sheath is a protective covering that surrounds nerve fibers, facilitating faster signal transmission.
What is the Amygdala?
The Amygdala is an almond-shaped cluster of nuclei in the brain involved in emotion regulation.
What is the Hippocampus?
The Hippocampus is a critical region for memory formation and spatial navigation.
What is the Cerebral Cortex?
The Cerebral Cortex is the outer layer of the brain responsible for higher-level functions such as thought and action.
What is the Endocrine System?
The Endocrine System is a collection of glands that produce hormones to regulate various bodily functions.
