Compare/Contrast Fermentation and Cell Respiration Flashcards
(3 cards)
Similarities of fermentation and cell respiration
Both Cellular respiration and fermentation result in the production of energy (ATP)
Both use ATP to produce a net gain of ATP
Glycolysis happens in cytoplasm of both eukaryotes and prokaryotes
Both use energy carrier NAD+ to carry electrons
Differences of fermentation
Fermentation can occur without oxygen
There are two forms of fermentation: lactic acid and alcoholic.
Fermentation is a cycle
Lactic acid fermentation products - lactic acid
Alcoholic fermentation products - carbon dioxide and ethanol
Net Gain of 2 ATP
Differences of Cell Respiration
Cellular respiration produces 36 ATP molecules where fermentation produces 2 ATP
respiration depends on the presence of oxygen
cellular respiration needs a molecule of glucose to begin the process
Has Krebs cycle and chemiosmosis/electron transport chain extra stages.
Happens in mitochondria (eukaryotes); cell membrane (prokaryotes)
