Complexity of reflex action Flashcards
(26 cards)
Name the eliciting stimulus in wiping reflex in frogs
Irritation at location of skin
In the wiping reflex, what does the foot position depend upon?
Depends upon stimulus location
List the 3 things the frogs spinal cord dealt with
Knee or ankle immobilised with cast, ankle weighed with heavy bracelet, stimulus on head & body bent over
Explain goal-directedness
Response able to achieve same outcome under different circumstances
Name the 2 reasons for making eye movements
Keep images on retina still, position images of interest onto fovea
Define the vestibular organs
Inner ear complex that mediate reflex
The semi-circular canals are responsible for which reflex?
Vestibular-ocular reflex
What are the consequences of loss of VOR?
Unable to keep eyes still inside head
Saccades allow what?
Allow direction change of eye (rapid jump)
Define fixation
Period of staring at something
In which two ways do the eyes move?
Rapid shifts from 1 position in orbit to another (saccades), much slower and smoother movements that gradually shift eye’s position in orbit (generated by VOR)
What do reflex saccades involve?
Involve pathways from sensory organs and superior colliculi and then to the PPRF
Define superior colliculi
Midbrain nuclei that are visible as 2 bumps on dorsal surface of midbrain
What are horizontal eye movements
Contraction of medial and lateral recti
Where are medial recti motorneurons located?
In oculomotor nuclei at midbrain level
Where are lateral recti motorneurons located?
In abducens nuclei at pontine level
How do eyes move left?
Signals from left abducens and right oculomotor nucleus
Describe how the eyes move right
Signals from right abducens and left oculomotor nucleus
What is a left saccade?
Simultaneous contraction of left eye lateral rectus and right eye medial rectus
What would be the consequences of a loss of VOR?
Eyes would jiggle around, making clear vision impossible.
Name the 3 dimensions VOR moves in
Horizontal, vertical and torsional
Define conjugate eye movements
Eyes move together in the same direction
What are disconjugate eye movements?
Eyes move together in opposite directions
Name the 3 things visual elicited reflexes involve
Retina, superior colliculi, PPRF
