how can artificial hormones be used to treat infertility?
it encourages the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, or improve the quality of eggs
describe the process of IVF
-women are given the drug
-their eggs mature
-egg and sperm cells are collected
-they are fertilised (in vitro)
-form an embryo
-implanted into the uterus
what are some disadvantages of IVF?
-not much more successful than a natural pregnancy
-expensive
-may be harmful
-may result in multiple births
what 2 hormones are used in contraception?
oestrogen and progesterone
what is an advantage of using the patch for contraception?
you only have to worry about changing it once a week
what is a disadvantage of taking the pill for contraception?
you have to remember to take it everyday
what is the most reliable way of giving hormones out of the pill, the patch, and the implant? why?
implant - you can’t forget it, more permanent, lasts longer
what is a disadvantage of getting an implant?
it’s painful, as you will need surgery
how do the diaphragm, intrauterine device and oral contraceptive work?
diaphragm - prevents sperm reaching the egg
intrauterine device - prevents embryo implanting
oral contraceptive - prevents release of the egg
why are drugs such as oral contraceptive first given at a low dose?
to initiate and deal with any side effects and their seriousness
how does the pill, condom and IUD prevent pregnancy?
pill - contains hormones to stop eggs maturing
condom - prevents sperm reaching the egg
IUD - stops an embryo implanting in the uterus
describe the differences between hormonal and non-hormonal methods of preventing pregnancy
-hormonal (such as the pill) use oestrogen and progesterone to stop the egg from getting released
-non-hormonal (such as condoms) prevent the sperm from getting to the egg
