Respiration Flashcards
(13 cards)
what is aerobic respiration?
a process that requires oxygen to release energy - happens in the mitochondria
what is the equation for aerobic respiration?
glucose + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water
what is anaerobic respiration?
a process that doesn’t require oxygen to release energy - happens in cytoplasm
what is the equation for anaerobic respiration?
humans/mammals - glucose = lactic acid
plants - glucose = ethanol + carbon dioxide
what type of reaction is aerobic respiration?
exothermic - energy can only be transferred
what do muscle cells use to transfer energy from glucose and what is this used for?
they use oxygen which is used to contract the muscles
what is the process of exercising involving muscle cells?
-when exercising muscles contract more frequently
-more energy is needed
-increased respiration means more oxygen
-for this to happen, blood needs to flow faster
what is oxygen debt?
-the amount of extra oxygen the body needs after exercise
-repay oxygen you didn’t get to your muscles in time
what is metabolism?
term used for all chemical reactions that go on inside an organisms body
what is a catabolic rate?
breaking down complex molecules into smaller molecules - releasing energy/heat
what is an anabolic rate?
builds molecules the body needs - requires energy
what is metabolic waste?
substances produced from chemical reactions that may be toxic and need to be removed
what is a metabolic rate?
speed at which chemical reactions take place in the body
