Endocrine System Flashcards
(5 cards)
which hormone is produced by the adrenal gland, when is it produced and what are its effects?
adrenaline - fight or flight situations - increases heart rate and gets our blood pumping faster
where is the hormone thyroxine produced, what is its role and how is the level controlled?
thyroid gland - controls metabolism, growth and development - pituitary gland releases TSH if levels are too low to stimulate thyroid (negative feedback)
how does the endocrine system produce a response to a stimulus?
-rely on hormones which are secreted by the glands and transported into the blood
-they spread slowly but effects last longer
-more general as they interact with many different cells
compare the hormonal effects with the response of the nervous system
-rely on electrical impulses that are transferred along nerve cells
-very fast so effects don’t last as long
-are classed as precise
identify the main glands from head to toe in the human body
-pituitary gland (brain)
-thyroid gland (neck)
-adrenal gland
-pancreas
-ovaries/testies
