what causes type 1 diabetes?
-when the pancreas stops producing insulin
-mainly genetics
when does type 1 diabetes usually start?
childhood
how is type 1 diabetes treated?
insulin injections
what causes type 2 diabetes?
-unhealthy diets
-body becomes resistant to insulin
what are the risk factors for type 2 diabetes?
-obesity
-inactive
how is type 2 diabetes treated?
-low sugar diet
-regular excercise
what are the main reproductive hormones in men and women?
women is oestrogen (ovaries)
men is testosterone (testies)
what is ovulation?
release of an egg
what are the hormones involved in the menstrual cycle and what are their roles?
oestrogen - stimulates uterus lining to grow
progesterone - stimulates the lining of the uterus
lutinising hormone (LH) - stimulates the release of an egg
follicular stimulating hormone (FSH) - stimulate eggs to mature
what happens in stage 1 of the menstrual cycle?
-menstruation
-period of bleeding
-uterus lining breaks down
what happens in stage 2 of the menstrual cycle?
-lining starts to build up again
- preparing lining for a fertilised egg
what happens in stage 3 of the menstrual cycle?
-ovulation on day 14
what happens in stage 4 of the menstrual cycle?
-maintains the lining of the uterus
what happens if there is or isn’t a fertilised egg?
ISN’T - wall breaks down and cycle starts again
IS - egg implants into the uterus, slowly developing into a fetus
what are the links of the interactions between hormones during the menstrual cycle?
-more FSH is produced to stimulate ovaries to produce oestrogen
-if oestrogen levels increase it inhibits FSH
-high oestrogen levels stimulate LH (spike in graph/ovulation)
-progesterone inhibits LH and FSH
