endocrine system Flashcards
What is the main funtion of the endocrine system?
-metabolism
- growth and development
- sexual funtion and reproduction
- heart rate
- sleeping cycle
- body tempreture
What are some of the similarities with the nervous and endocrine system?
- small quantities
- regulate other cells and tissues
- act through receptors
what are the 4 diffrent types of humoural communications?
endocrine- from gland via blood
neurocrine- via axonal transport and then via blood
paracrine- neighboring cells of diffrent types
Autocrine- neighboring cells of the same type
What are the main funtions of the Hypothalimus?
- maintain chemical and tempreture homeostasis
- funtions with the limbic system
- controls the release of hormones from the anterior and posterior pitary
What is Thyroxine and what are its main funtions?
- thyroxine controls how much energy your body uses( the metabolic rate)
- it has physilogical effects such as increased BMR and accelerates protien synthsis
What is calcitonin?
- it is a hormone that helps regulate the calcuim levels in your blood by decreasing it.
What is the adrenal medulla?
- it is the inner part of the adrenal gland and its main purpose is to control the horomnes that intiate the flight or fight responce.
What are 4 main funtions of the adrenal medulla?
- increase in the rate and strength of the heartbeat which leads to increased BP
- rise in blood sugar
- pupils dialte
- clotting time of blood is reduced
What is Thymosins and what do they do in the endocrine system?
- a peptide hormone that is produced by the thymus gland and makes T cells which are invloved in immune respopnces. they affect the production of T Lymphnotes( white blood cells)
- it is also required for maturation of T and B cells
