17
Q

Where are eggs produced?

18
Q

What are the milk - producing glands?

19
Q

Menstruation (monthly ‘period’)

A

When the vagina discharges blood and mucus

20
Q

How long is the menstrual cycle?

21
Q

What is the point of the menstrual cycle?

A

Egg production controlled by a hormone feedback system

22
Q

What endocrine glands run the hormone feedback system in the female reproductive system?

A

Hypothalamus and pituitary glands (in the brain)

23
Q

What happens from day 1 of a period?

A

Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) helps a new egg form in an egg follicle

24
Q

FSH

A

Follicle Stimulating Hormone

25
What happens from **day 4** of a period?
The **follicle** produces oestrogen (promoting growth of the uterus and breasts), releasing luteinizing hormone (LH) and blocking FSH output
26
LH
**L**uteinizing **H**ormone
27
What happens from **day 12** of a period?
LH bursts the **follicle**, releasing an egg and transforming the follicle into a **corpus luteum** giving way to oestrogen and progesterone
28
Ovum
Egg
29
What happens from **day 14** of a period?
**Progesterone** prepares the uterus wall to receive a fertilised egg. If fertilisation **fails to occur**, the corpus luteum shrinks. LH, oestrogen and progesterone output fall, the uterus lining breaks up and its bloody fragments escape in the monthly menstrual discharge
30
What **falls/reduces from day 14** of a period?
LH, oestrogen and progesterone
31
Ovulation
The process of when a mature ovum (egg) is released from the ovary into a fallopian tube
