Enzymes Flashcards
(5 cards)
What are enzymes ?
They are in everything and do thousands of different chemical reactions
These need to be carefully controlled to make it correct
Raising the temperature will speed it up but also unwanted ones too
Living things make enzymes which act as biological catalysts.
Enzymes help us to useful chemical reactions in our bodies
Enzymes shapes and substrates?
Chemical reactions involve things being split apart or joined
The substrate is changed
Every enzymes has an active site this joins the substrate
Enzymes are a perfect fit for one specific substrate
If it doesn’t fit the reaction won’t change
How does temperature affect the rate of reaction?
Temperature Increases rate of reaction until it gets too hot and denatures
All enzymes have optimum temperatures they work at
How does pH affect the rate of reaction?
All enzymes work at different optimum pHs usually it’s pH7
If pH is too high or low some enzymes will begin to fall apart and break bonds
How does substrate concentration affect the rate of reaction?
The more substrate means that there is more ‘thing’ for the enzyme to react with.
But with all things this reaches an optimum point where the amount of substrate doesn’t increase it due to enzymes limitation
