evaluating Flashcards
deeper analysis
When evaluating avoid shitty ones like bigger sample
Identify the strengths or limitation
Link it to the study
Explain why this is relevant to the behaviour
One limitation is that the study has bidirectional ambiguity, that is it is unclear if watching more violent television causes children to be violent, or if more violent children watch more violent television. Though a correlation is established, it does not show a cause-and-effect relationship.
mthodological
Methodological -
How was the research conducted?
Strengths and limitations of the method used
Sample
Internal validity - did confounding variables influence the study
Variables - are they well defined????
Construct validity - Construct validity refers to how well a test, tool, or measure actually measures the psychological concept (or “construct”) it claims to measure. Linking to..
Inter rater reliability - how confidently can different investigators reach the same conclusions
Demand characteristics - expectancy effect (guessig and acting accordingly) or screw you effect (fucking it up)
Replication causing reliability
Ecological validity
Causality or just a correlation

Data
Theory
When data is quantitative researcher triangulation allows for inter rater reliability.
Qualitative data increases credibility meaning how accurately different researcher can portray the participants true experience
Finally, theory triangulation is often used to explain a behavior. This is when different approaches - that is, biological, cognitive, and sociocultural - work together to explain behavior to take for a more holistic approach to the problem.
matched pairs
helps to singulize one topic
Using a matched design is grouping pairs based on similar characteristics and then putting them in different conditions.
remember to doubt and make it
confusing !!! Areas of uncertainty are your doubts of the study and how you would differ in approach. Asking questions is an important part of evaluating research.
critical thinking
the wide quotation is, how does one factor influence human behavior?
Critical thinking is the explanation of why….
So eg its to do with influence on the brain
HOW AND WHY
Like an english essay, keep it simple and then do the building. Don’t write a shitty list of explanations, structure it richly.
Think of an English essay.
Go in depth analysis of the studies.
One study may be used for the basic link, and then another study to build upon this
You must argue against yourself. You think of creating a well balanced essay - linking to this ‘it’s complicated’. You must always zoom out and think of the other wide influences.
You may welcome a new approach and then connect it to the aspect.
How does the hormones change due to culture
How does the biology change stressors
