genrelizing Flashcards
qualitative
For qualitative research the issue of transferability should be considered i.e. the extent to which the findings could be
transferred to the target population and the extent to which the research
can be generalised to inform an existing or new theory’
For qualitative the samples may still be small, yet genrelizable
Volunteer is usually not genrelizable
quantataive
sample size and demographics are important in terms of how representative they are and whether the behaviour observed in the study can be generalised to other settings (external and ecological validity)
Replicability is key; representational genrelizability
Theoretical genrelizability is when the findings of one are used to support a theory or investigation different to the study, its genrelizing results to psych not life
respresentational genrelizability
Can be applied to the population in which it was taken; eg if u take from IB students can it be applied to all IB students.
Qualitative small sample types usually makes this hard
Inferential generalization
Otherwise known as transferability
Can be transferred to outside of the study
Eg done with IB students in the UK may not be transferable to moscow
Theoretical genrelization
Theoretical concepts can be used to develop theories
non-probability sample
A non-probability sample is when not all members of the population have an equal chance of being selected to participate in a study.
slection bias
Selection bias is a type of bias that occurs when the method of selecting participants leads to a non-representative sample.
maybe within the participants
