Structural Functionalism
Various segments of society serve a purpose for the society as a whole.
Criticism: Doesn’t account for destructive forces w/in a society/overlooks social issues.
Symbolic Interactionism
Each individual is placed at the centre of understanding society b/c social values + roles are shaped by individual interpretations.
- We accept specific roles to fit in
- We react certain ways to fit these roles
Collectivist Social Thinking
Cultural viewpoint characterized by emphasis on cohesiveness among individuals + prioritization of the group over the individual.
Functionalist Race Theory
By fostering prejudice, a dominant group can create a feeling of superiority over minority groups, + thus strengthen its own members’ self concepts.
Exploitation Theory
A function of racism is to keep minorities in low-paying jobs + provide dominant groups w/ cheap labour.

How Dominant Groups Explicitly & Implicitly Reinforce Racial Bias
- Moral justification for keeping an unequal society
- Discourage minority groups from questioning their social status
- Encourage support for the social hierarchy that already exists
Psychology of Self-Justification
If the dominant groups can convince themselves that another group is inherently inferior, immoral, or dangerous, we can feel justified in discriminating against them.
6 Principles of Nonviolence
- Not passive, requires change
- Seeks reconciliation
- Eliminates evil, not destroy the evildoer
- Willingness to accept suffering for the cause, but never inflict it
- Rejection of hatred + violence
- Faith that justice will prevail
