experimental design Flashcards
(10 cards)
independent groups design
-different participants complete in both conditions
-randomly allocated to condition
independent groups design limitations
-participant variables: if more participants eith particular characteristic assigned to a group, can influence measurement DV (extraneous variable)
-need double participants to get same data
repeated measures design
-same participants complete in each condition
repeated measures design limitation
-order effects: taking part in first condition influences performance in second condition e.g worsen due to fatigue or boredom
-participants more likely figure out aim, alter behaviour due to demand characteristics
counter balancing repeated measures design
-attempts to control order effects
-ABBA format, half participants complete condition A first then B, others condition B first then A
independent groups design strength
-less likely work out aim than in repeated measures, reduce demand characteristics
-no order effects, only one condition
repeated measures design strengths
-needs less participants than independent measures for same data
-participant variables not a problem as take part both conditions
matched pairs design
-participants assessed and ranked on a characteristic
-matched with another participant similar characteristic, randomly assigned to condition
matched pairs design strengths
-reduced participant variables as matched on relevant characteristic
-no order effects, take part one condition
matched pairs design limitation
-matched pairs takes longer set up than others
-needs twice as many participants than repeated measures
-participants similar but not identical so may still be some participant variables between conditions that influence DV
