extraneous variable
-any variable aside from IV that couple influence measurement of DV
demand characteristics
-if participant think discovered aim, may alter behaviour to match what they think researcher wants, could be due to cues
participant variables
-in independent groups design if more people with relevant characteristics or skills in one condition, could result in different performance unrelated to IV
situational variables
-environmental factors present in one condition but not the other, could lead to change in behaviour
confounding variable
a type of extraneous variable that influences both the independent and dependent variables, making it difficult to determine the true effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable
