Experimental Methods Flashcards
What is a hypothesis
A possible explanation for an observation
Prediction
Three types of a hypothesis
One tailed. directional
Two tailed. non-directional
Null. No difference/relationship will be found.
What is the directional hypothesis?
States which direction the result will go in
Example young people will do significantly better than old people on a memory test
What is a non-directional hypothesis?
Less clear of a direction but acknowledges there will be a difference/relationship and results found
There will be a significant difference between Young and Old people in performance of a memory test
What is an aim?
A general statement which a researcher intends to investigate the whole purpose of the study
What is operationalisation?
Clearly defining variables in terms of how they can be measured
Variables clear to replicate
