To assess the quality of research conducted by psychologists in terms of validity and reliability
So all research published is trust worthy.
When peer reviewing what is the relationship between the reviewer and researcher
The reviewer and researcher are anonymous and unknown to each other to remover bias
What is anonymity
Peer doing the review remains anonymous throughout the process as get more honest review
What is the aim of publication bias
Researchers natural tendency to publish more headline grabbing findings to increase there credibility
They also prefer to post a positive result
Gives false impression as don’t post info that doesn’t meet this criteria
What is burying groundbreaking research
Peer review process may suppress research opposing mainstream research as want to maintain the status quo in a specific scientific field. Or go against the researchers own opinion.
Peer review might slow down the rate of change within a particular scientific field
What are economy implications
Psychological research has effect on the economy (tax revenue, employability rate).
Example of economic implications real life
Importance of role of the father equally capable of raising the child
This has implications on shared parental/maternaty leave so both can work
Development of treatments as absences from work cost economy £15 billion a year
Recent government report said that 1/4 was due to mental health disorders by helping form treatments like drug therapies it is increasing the number of people going to work.
