Self Report Techniques Flashcards
What is a self report?
Involves people talking about their behaviour
Examples are interviews and questionnaire
How were the questions designed in a questionnaire?
Open all closed
What is a close question?
A question that has a fixed number of responses
An example of this is a yes or no question
More quantitive data
What is an open question?
When it does not have a fixed range of answers and responsers are free to answer in any way they wish
This is more qualitative data
Measuring options in questionaire
Likert scale
Rating scale
Choice options
Advantage of a questionnaire
Can be sent to potentially thousands of people creating a large sample
Responses will usually be easy to evaluate, especially close questions
Disadvantages of a questionnaire
The responses may be biased
socially desirability bias- not being truthful to to present themselves in a bad light
Response bias -answer all questions in a similar way lazy not reading
Acquiescence bias - tenancy to agree with most things
All these things affect the validity
Designs for interviews
Can be one-to-one or in groups
Structured
UnStructured
Semistructured
What is a structured?
When all the questions are predetermined
What is an unstructured interview?
When the researcher creates the questions and response to the persons answers
What is a semi structured interview?
When there are preset questions but also the opportunity to ask extra questions
Strength of a structured interview
Easily repeated
Easy to compare/analyse results
Limitation of structured interview
Inflexible and can’t include additional information
What is a strength of an unstructured interview?
Allow more flexibility and to investigate the answers more
What a limitation of an unstructured interview
It is difficult to repeat
And hard to analyse
When writing questions, what do you need to think about?
Be free of technical language (don’t overuse jargon)
Avoid emotive language and leading questions
Not be double barrelled - 2 questions in one
Avoid double negatives
What is a likert scale
Responder indicates there agreement with question
Strongly agree = 1
Strongly disagree =5
What is rating scale
Use a scale to indicate the strength of feeling to specific question
What is a fixed choice option
Choose catagory applies to them
