Interential Testing Flashcards
What is a statistical test
Determine whether the results of an experiment is significant statistically
When carrying out a statistical test the probability level is
5%
Meaning there is only 5% chance that the result were due to chance
When comparing the calculated/ observed value and critical value
The observed value must be greater than or lower than the critical value to be significant
What is type 1 error
The alternative hypothesis is mistakenly accepted
Says there is a significant difference between the groups but in reality there isn’t
This is likely when the significance level is too lenient for example 10%
What is type II error
Null hypothesis is mistakenly accepted
Says there is no significant difference when there is
Usually when the significance level is too strict for example 1%
Choosing a statistical test
Difference or correlation
Related (repeated measures or match pairs) or unrelated design (independent measures)
Nominal or ordinal or interval
Probability/ significance level
Explain what is meant by significance at p<0.05
95% confidence
How to carry out a sign test
Data converted to nominal data = substrate result from condition 2 from condition 1
Plus and minuses are added up
Get the total plus and minus
Sum of less frequent sign is used as S
The calculated value S is compared to critical value
