Research issues Flashcards
What is an extraneous variable?
Any other variable other that the independent variable that may affects the dependent variable
Depression, anxiety hunger, age
Might effect
Confounding variables definition
Variables other than the IV that definitely affect the DV as the effects very systematically with the Iv
What is a demand characteristic?
Participant tries to guess the aim of the study altering their response so they behave accordingly to the study
What is investigator effects?
Unwanted influence that the investigator/experimenter communicates to the participants affecting their behaviour
What is randomisation?
A way of controlling for the effects of extraneous and confounding variables
Standardisation definition
Where the experiment is identical for every participant improving its ability to be replicated
What is single blind?
When participants doesn’t know the aim of the study
What is double blind?
When the participant and the investigator who deals with the participants do not know the aim of the study
What is the strength of a single blind and double blind experiment?
Reduces the possibility of demand characteristics
And reduces investigator effects
Increasing the validity
What is a control group and why is it useful?
It’s used for a comparison
