Eye👁 Flashcards
(22 cards)
Pupil
Opening in the middle of the eye where light passes through
Iris
- visible coloured ring at the front of the eye
- adjusts to control the amount of light entering the eye through the pupil
Tear glands
Produces tears to clean and lubricate the front of the eye.
-fluid contains salt and has natural antiseptic properties to prevent infection
Aqueous and vitreous humours(fluids)
Watery, jelly-like fluids that fill the eye, keep eye in shape and nourish it
Conjunctiva
Thing membrane that protects the eye
Cornea
- front of eye, light passes through
- passes through cornea to retina
Retina
Inner-lining of the eye
-contains light-sensitive cells called rods and cones
Macula
High concentration of photoreceptors that detentions light and send signals to the brain that interprets them to images
Optic nerve
Nerve cells exit the eye, called the blind spot
Ciliary nerve
Enables the lens to shape for focusing, contracts to stretch lense making it flatter and thinner
Suspensions ligaments
Attaches the lense to the ciliary nerve
Lens
Focuses light entering the eye
What are the possible causes of cataracts
- diabetes
- exposure to UV light often
- taking medication
- smoking and drinking
- family history
Effects of cataracts
- less clear vision
- blurred misty vision
- double vision
- difficulty seeing in bright or dim light.
What part of the eye does AMD effect
Retina
Related links to AMD
Smoking
High blood pressure
Being overweight and having a family history
What does AMD stand for
Age-related macular degeneration
What is Glaucoma
Build up of pressure in the eye when fluid from aqueous humour is unable to drain properly.
What increases risk of glaucoma
- age
- ethnicity (Caribbean, African or Asian)
- family history
- medications (diabetes medication)
Possible causes of Retinopathy
- complication of having diabetes
- high blood sugar levels
- damaging the retina
- blood sugar levels cause blood vessels to narrow and leak, so abnormal blood flow to the retina.
Effects of retinopathy
Blindness if left untreated
Treatment for cataracts
Laser eye surgery
Surgically remove the cataracts
