Neurons🦠 Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is a neuron
Specialised nerve cell that transmits electrical impulses from one part of the body to another
Axon
A long, thread like part of a neurone where impulses are conducted away from the cell to another part of the body
Dendron/dendrite
They receive impulses and carry them towards cell body
Myelin sheath
Fatty white substances surrounding axon that protects and insulates to ensure efficient impulse transmission
Synapse
The part of the neurone that electrical impulses pass through(information)
3 elements of a synapse
- pre-synaptic membrane
- post-synaptic membrane
- synaptic gap(cleft)
Function of the synapse 1-4
1- electrical impulse travels along an axon
2- triggers nerve ending to neurone to release neurotransmitters
3-chemicals diffuse along synaptic gap and transmit signals
4-they bind with receptor molecules on membrane of next neurone
