GPT Endocrinology Notes Flashcards
(56 cards)
What connects the hypothalamus to the pituitary?
Infundibulum
What system carries hypothalamic hormones to the anterior pituitary?
Hypophyseal portal system
Which hormone inhibits prolactin release?
Dopamine
Which hypothalamic hormone stimulates ACTH release?
CRH (Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone)
What hormone inhibits GH and TSH release?
Somatostatin
What are the hormones of the anterior pituitary?
FSH, LH, ACTH, TSH, Prolactin, Endorphins, GH (FLAT PEG)
What type of tissue is the anterior pituitary derived from?
Oral ectoderm (Rathke’s pouch)
What stimulates GH secretion?
GHRH from hypothalamus
What hormone stimulates prolactin release?
TRH (Thyrotropin-Releasing Hormone)
Where are posterior pituitary hormones synthesized?
Hypothalamus (supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei)
What hormones are released by the posterior pituitary?
ADH (vasopressin) and oxytocin
What does ADH do?
Increases water reabsorption in kidneys (via V2 receptors)
What stimulates oxytocin release?
Suckling, uterine stretch
What hormones are produced by follicular cells?
T3 and T4
What cells secrete calcitonin?
Parafollicular cells (C cells)
What stimulates T3/T4 production?
TSH from anterior pituitary
What is the function of T3/T4?
Increases basal metabolic rate, heat, HR, GI motility
What hormone do parathyroid glands secrete?
Parathyroid hormone (PTH)
What does PTH do to calcium levels?
Increases serum calcium
How does PTH increase calcium?
Activates osteoclasts, increases renal reabsorption, activates vitamin D
