Histology - Basic Tissue Types Flashcards
(37 cards)
what are the 4 basic tissue types?
epithelial, connective, muscle, nervous
what is the function of epithelial tissue?
physical protection
transport control
activiely moving fluids across surfaces
produce specialized secretions
sensory
what is the function of connective tissue?
to keep things together
what is the function of muscle tissue?
to move things
what is the function of nervous tissue?
to coordinate things
what type of tissue is blood considered?
connective tissue
what are anchoring junctions?
they anchor a cell to another cell or to the basement membrane
what are they types of anchoring junctions?
desmosome, adherens, hemidesmosome
what does a hemidesmosome do?
anchor the cell to the basement membrane
what does a desmosome do? how?
anchor cells together by binding intermediate filaments
what is another name for an adherens junction? why?
belt desmosome
they are belt like in appearance
what does an adherens do? How?
anchor cells together by binding actin filaments
what is the function of a tight junction?
to seal off spaces above and below the epithelium
what is the function of a gap junction?
to connect the cytoplasms of two adjacent cells
which cells have more cytoplasm? which cells have less?
cells that are more active have more cytoplasm
passive cells have less cytoplasm
what are the types of epithelium?
squamous, cuboidal, columnar
what type of epithelium is this?

squamous
what type of epithelium is this?

cuboidal
what type of epithelium is this?

columnar
what is the term for this organization of epithelium?

transitional
what is the term for this organization of epithelium?

pseudostratified
what are the 5 cellular characteristics of epithelia?
- cohesive interaction between cells, forming continuous cell layers
- 3 types of membrane domains
- tight junctions
- polarized distribution of different organelles
- quasi-immobility of the group of epithelial cells relative to local environment
what are the 3 membrane domains of epithelia?
apical, lateral, basal
what is the differece between endocrine and exocrine glands?
exocrine glands have a duct, endocrine glads do not
