Sensory-motor mode: audio/visual etc

Semanticity: meaningful signs/representations

Arbitrarines; no inherent connection between the form of a linguistic sign and its meaning.

Pragmatic function: serves some purpose

interchangeability: indivu’s can send and receive

Cultural transmission: Language is passed down through generations and learned from the surrounding culture.

Differences in communication systems of humans vs other

A

Discreteness: Language is made of discrete units (phonemes) that can be combined to create meaning

Duality of patterning: Language is composed of units (eg words, or morphemes) that can be combined into larger units.

Displacement: Language allows us to talk about things that are not present in the here and now

Productivity/creativity: Creating new words/expressions all the time

!! some of these are found in other species but only humans have them all
