Q

Minimal attachment (Linear Order ) Principle

A

Frazier. Purely based on syntax

Mental parser tries to attach each incoming word (set of words) in the simplest possible way, given the structure built until that point

4 principles;
Simplicity bias (preference for simple sentences)
Linear order (Order of words guiding the interpretation)
Attachment decisions (Refers to assignment of words to specific structures in ambiguous phrase)
Minimalism (preference for interpretations that require minimal attachment)

Q

Contextual cues

A

Theories on parsing not purely based on syntax

found that in some sentences the meaning seems to make it easier.

‘the horsed raced across the barn fell’

vs

’ The computer repaired by the technician broke’

Q

P600 EPR component

A

Appears in grammar anomalies. Positive deflection peaking around 600 ms (like N400)

Elicited when
1. Syntactic violations occur; grammar error
2. Garden-Path sentences: initially lead the reader done one path and then switch. *horse barn S
3. Linguistic reanalysis: Repairing errors or ambiguities.
4. Sentence complexity: syntactically complex sentences that require more processing
