homeostasis Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is homeostasis?
Physiological control system that maintains the internal environment within restricted limits
What are the factors which must be controlled in homeostasis?
Body temperature, blood pH, blood glucose concentration, water potential of the blood
Why does temperature need to be maintained?
Provides an optimum for enzyme activity
Why does blood pH need to be maintained?
Provides an optimum pH for enzyme activity
Why does blood glucose need to be maintained?
Provide a sufficient substrate for respiration to release energy for metabolic processes
Why does the water potential need to be maintained?
So that excess water doesn’t enter or leave the cells by osmosis
What mechanism is relied on in homeostasis?
Negative feedback
What does negative feedback do?
Restores systems to original level
What do deviations from the norm result in?
Corrective process to restore the norm
