What is the first stage in the kidney?
Ultrafiltration
Where does ultrafiltration occur?
Glomerulus and renal capsule
What is the product of ultrafiltration?
Glomerular filtrate
What is each glomerulus supplied with?
Afferent arteriole
Where does the afferent arteriole branch from?
Renal artery
How is the filtrate forced out of the glomerulus?
High blood pressure created by contraction of the left ventricle
What is the property of the afferent arterioles that creates a higher blood pressure?
It is wider than the efferent arteriole, creating a bottle neck effect
What does the barrier between the blood in the capillary and the filtrate consist of?
Two cells and produces three filtration layers
What do the endothelial cells in the capillary have?
Pores between them that allow all the plasma to pass through but holds back blood cells
What are the endothelial cells attached to?
The basement membrane
What does the basement membrane act as?
The main fine filter
What does the basement membrane hold back?
Large plasma proteins
What are the epithelium cells on the wall of the renal capsule known as?
Podocytes
What do podocytes contain?
Feet like structures which extend to the basement membrane
What do podocytes allow?
Filtrate to pass rapidly between them through filtration slits
What does each efferent arteriole form?
A capillary network around each nephron into which useful substances are selectively reabsorbed
How does the filtered blood leave the kidney?
Renal vein
