receptors Flashcards
(11 cards)
What are most receptors?
Cells and they are specific
What do Pacinian corpuscles respond to?
Changes in mechanical pressure
What do receptors act as?
Transducers
What does this mean?
They convert one form of energy into another
What do Pacinian corpuscles transduce?
Pressure
What do they convert this into?
A greater potential which creates a nerve impulse
What does this neurone contain?
Stretch mediated sodium ion channels
What are these channels like in resting state?
Closed to prevent sodium ions from entering
What happens when a stimulus is detected?
Receptors change shape and become stretched
What does this cause?
Deformation of stretch mediated channels and sodium ions diffuse which produces a generator potential
What happens if the generator potential is above the threshold?
Action potential is produced, and impulses are transmitted
