skeletal muscle structure and function Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is skeletal muscle also known as?
Striped or striated muscle
What does muscle under a microscope consist of?
Long muscle fibres or cells
What is the shape of muscle fibre?
Cylindrical
What are muscle fibres enclosed by?
A cell surface membrane or sarcolemma
What do muscle fibres contain?
Many nuclei/ multinucleate
What are the protein strands called inside muscle fibres?
Myofibrils
How are muscle fibres arranged?
In parallel to give a striped appearance
What are the protein filaments called?
Myosin and actin
What is each repeating pattern called?
Sarcomere
What are the thick filaments?
Myosin
What are the thin filaments?
Actin
What is the A band or dark band?
The length of myosin filaments
Why are the outer regions of the A band dark?
They contain overlapping myosin and actin
What is the H zone?
It only contains myosin filament
What is the M line?
Connects the myosin filaments in the A band
What does the I band/ light band contain?
Only actin filaments
What does the Z line connect?
Actin filaments on the boundary of the sarcomere
