hypothesis Flashcards
(9 cards)
what is a hypothesis ?
A clear, precise, testable statement that states the relationship between the variables being investigated
what is a directional hypothesis?
Testable statement that states the direction of the difference or relationship.
what is a non directional hypothesis?
Testable statement that does not state the direction of the difference or relationship.
what is a null hypothesis?
A statement predicting no effect or no difference between variables.
Example of a directional hypothesis?
People who sleep for 8 hours will recall more words than those who sleep for 4 hours
Example of a non-directional hypothesis?
There will be a difference in word recall between people who sleep for 4 hours and 8 hours.
Example of a null hypothesis?
There will be no difference in word recall between people who sleep for 4 hours and 8 hours.
When should a directional hypothesis be used?
When previous research clearly suggests the expected outcome.
When should a non-directional hypothesis be used?
When there’s no clear prior research or uncertainty about the direction of the effect.
